ABOUT GOD, THE DEVIL AND BOB
Subject: "God, the Devil and Bob" (NBC)
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000
From: David Buckna

From Tuesday's night show... God and the Devil have set up camp somewhere in remotest Africa: God:(voice of James Garner) You know, it wouldn't kill ya to look around and enjoy the scenery.
Devil:(with a British accent!) I'm sorry. I've got alot of paperwork to do. Everything in my office is backed up. God: You really got to learn to delegate. Devil: _Excuse_ me. Who founded the Harvard Business School? I think I know how to manage. ...
God: Come on, let's take a walk. I'll show ya where the Leakey's found those bones I buried.
---- Later, back in Hell, the Devil's assistant (Smack) is seen torturing a guy named Carl on a rack. Nah, it couldn't be Carl Sagan, could it? >From what I've seen so far (two episodes) I really like this program. It reminds me of what you would get if you combined "The Screwtape Letters" (by C.S. Lewis) with a Tony Danza sitcom.

I think Jerry Falwell's response (made without even seeing the first episode) was an over-reaction:
"DATE: March 9, 2000

GOD, THE DEVIL, AND BLASPHEMY: Thursday night's premiere episode of NBC's "God, the Devil and Bob," an animated sitcom, is proof that no matter how far the networks go in their continuing exploration of offensiveness and sacrilege, there is always a new echelon of blasphemy on the horizon. Not that everyone is going to like the show. No doubt some believers _will_ find elements of the show offensive." http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/tv/let009.htm http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/tv/let006.htm

Father Ellwood Kieser who heads up Paulist Productions and acts as a consultant on the upcoming animated sitcom God, the Devil and Bob has decried decisions by two NBC affiliates in Salt Lake City and Pocatello, Idaho not to carry the show. In an interview appearing in today's (Tuesday) Washington Post, Kieser said, "I found the show delightfully human and funny and yet theologically very perceptive. ... There's all this clamor for family entertainment, and all the studies indicate there's a sizable audience for shows that a family can sit down and watch together and then discuss. Part of the popularity of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is that the family can watch it together. This is the same thing in a religious, God-centered context."

USING MOVIES IN CHURCH
Subject: Greetings....and Thanks
Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000
From: "Doug and Chris Showalter"

Greetings David, I just wanted to write, to say thanks to you for your web site. I think it is great. I'm a UCC minister, was ordained almost 27 years ago, and have been a parish minister ever since, serving in Vermont, Maine seacoast, and now Cape Cod. During that time my wife and I have always loved movies, and in the last 5 years we have amassed quite a collection of videos. However, it is only in the last few years [after receiving my D. Min. in Preaching from Chicago Theological Seminary] that I have begun to use movies [depict scenes frm them] in my preaching from time to time. What a great resource. And how helpful your site is in helping one to consider the biblical/religious themes which are treated/suggested in different movies. There once was a noted UCC minister in CT who always preached a sermon on the Academy Award winning movie of the year--exploring the presence [or lack?] of Christian themes therein. I am considering doing the same myself. And, for my Lenten Bible discussions this year, I am leading a four session course on "The Passion of Jesus: According the Fourth Gospel and Hollywood." It has been a delight as we compare different "Jesus movies" to biblical accounts. A year from now, I may well do a course for my church people on "Christ figures" in the movies. Last fall I did a series on Grace which was prefaced by folks watching the movie "Babette's Feast." Some of my people really enjoyed that. Best wishes, and please do keep up the good work. Your web site is an inspiration, and a wonderful way to interface aspects of the gospel with the concerns and presentations of modern culture.
Thanks. Doug Showalter
Response: I hope you do not mind me posting your email. I want other ministers to know that there are lots of us out there that really enjoy interacting with the culture. I think there are many who do so in the closet. I invite them to come out and openly discuss their love of film and culture -just as you are doing. -David.

From: Kitty -Please do not post my e:mail address,

thanks Simon Birch- The movie is the greatest, I have seen it many times and absolutely LOVE it. My daughters 7 &10 watch it with us. We try to explain what the movie is about. The girls are learning alot from a movie like this. It shows them about loving, caring, friendship, people with handicaps and people whom judge people without giving them a chance. This is our second favorite movie: The Quiet Man is our favorite. This is a must see for everyone. Some language but we just briefly explained it and went on with the rest of the movie. Thumbs..... way............ UP!!!!!

Response: Thanks for being a great mom! Involement with your kids -what a great concept. I hope it catches on. -David.

LEONARDO AS THE SERPENT IN PARADISE
Subject: Leonardo as the serpent. The_Beach

From: "C.J.Evans" sou049@bangor.ac.uk

The most intresting element of this movie, was to me, the role played by Richard (Leonardo Di Caprio) in the fall of the community. He arrives on the island wearing a t-shirt with the title 'el-diablo' (The Devil!) And it is his actions which represent most clearly the role of the serpent in Eden (For example as a visitng tourist comes running from out of the marijuana field chased by a gaurd, Richard appears and 'hisses' at her, consequently she delays and is shot by the gaurd.) As the agent of the fall it is also Richard who kills Christo (not very subtle!) and introduces death to the commune. Surprisingly Richard is not aware of this role. Is he an unwitting satan, like Judas, a 'puppet betrayer'?

CIDER HOUSE GETS INTERESTING RESPONSE

LOVE AND TENDERNESS, BUT....
Subject: Cider House
Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000
From: "Jon Zuck"

Not knowing anything about the story, I saw The Cider House Rules with an open mind. I must say I was very disappointed. Yes, there is a tremendous amount of love and tenderness in the film, but almost all modern movies have "morals," some point, some lesson to be learned. The lesson here seemed to be that there are no rules, that maturity comes only when rules are forsaken. Yes, I am pro-life, and yes, I was offended by the abortion stance of the film, but I really think that there were moral problems here beyond that. Lies and manipulations almost never have consequences in this movie, the exception being the incest sub-plot. According to Cider House, any thing done for "mercy" is a good thing. When their brothers and sister orphans die, the children are just told they got a home. (True in a sense, but they imply adoption.) Does no one ever go to the graveyard and rail, "Why didn't you tell me they died?" Yes, Dr. Larch is compassionate, yes he does think about the moral issues of abortion, yes, he does love Homer and the other kids. But the dark side of his overarching controlling and guilt-manipulating nature never is addressed. Larch tries manipulating Homer from afar as strongly as he did when Homer lived with him in at the orphanage. Because Larch wants him to be his successor, he should. Because Larch wants him to do abortions, he should. Because Larch wants him to never go into the military, he shouldn't. Because Larch shapes Homer's life for him, he should follow it. It is beyond belief that Homer feels no anger when he realizes that he was lied to his entire life about his health. Is the lesson that you can't find happiness away from home, you should live there forever, that if you don't have a direction for your life, you should let another make it for you? Some call this a coming-of-age movie, but it seems like the point maturity is reached is in either performing abortions or going home! Why not honesty? Would Homer ever confess that he cheated with his friend's fiance? Why not moving in a new direction? Why not confronting Larch for the hurtfulness of his manipulation? It greatly bothers me. Why is a forged certificate okay, as long as it's forged well? This isn't Gattaca or Nazi Germany where forgery might be the only way to escape to a life worth living. This is Maine! The acting was excellent, but it amazes me that critics will rally around a movie like Cider House Rules, and destroy a movie like Simon Birch. Why? The charge of "sentimentality" could just as easily apply to Cider House as Simon Birch. Was it that one was truer to the book which inspired it? I don't know. I felt drained watching it, and get drained just thinking about it. ---

MY ETHICS CLASS WATCHECIDER HOUSE RULES
Subject: Cider_House
Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000
From: Miss netne

My ethics class watched this movie together and I thought it was very interesting. We were discussing the role of law in society. What is another word for law? Rules? THis movie was full of people bending the rules, making the rules, and even finding out the rules. The people in the Cider House had no idea what the rules were so they created their own. Dr. Larch knew what the rules were but he thought the real world was above them so he bent them. It was a very good movie. Yes, there were sexual scenes in it but it was a part of the story. She was already with a man and the moment he leaves she breaks the rules and goes to be with another men. I found it intersting in the beginning that the main character said people should just be responsible from the beginning and not have sex. Then they wouldn't have the problem of abortion. When he gets out into the real world and is tempted by a young lady his statement goes out the window.
Response: Ah yes, the flaws of humanity. Say on thing and do another! I would love to have been in your ethics class. Cider House has so many issues. -David.

DOCTOR FROM CYPRUS

From: george ioannides

Warm greetings from Cyprus! My name is Georgios Ioannides and I work as a doctor in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. I have already seen on the national tv channel (CyBC) the previous episodes of the magnificent "Bible" series and I must admit that I consider this project to be revealing and inspiring. Unfortunately the latest production "Jesus" hasn't been broadcast in my country yet but I have already read some articles and comments on it that really aroused my curiosity.Since I'm trying to obtain as many information in detail as I can , I would be grateful if you had the time and patience to answer to a few clarifying questions of mine:
1) First of all, I've read that this film emphasizes the humanity of Jesus presenting Him as a friendly person Who enjoys life but Who also suffers in agony nailed on the cross. What are your comments on that?
2) Is it accurate that in this film Maria Magdalene openly expresses her devotion and love for Jesus but He politely rejects her?
Response:Yes, I called and they assured me this is so. -David.
3) For what reason does Judas betray his master according to the film? Judas' behaviour has remained a mystery over centuries and I'm curious to know about the approach of this film on the matter.
Response: I do not know, As soon as I see the film I will tell you. -David.
4) Is the representation of Jesus' passion (especially the scenes of Jesus being scourged and crucified) realistic enough to disturb viewers of small age?
Response: I hope so. -David.
5) Are there any trailers of this production on the net? I hope that the "Jesus" miniseries will have been broadcast in my country by the end of his year. Looking forward to your replying.
Response: I do not have release dates for your country. I will try to find out however. -David.

MAURA'S FAVORITE FILMS
Subject: Favorite films
Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000
From: "Maura NiConnell"

My top films are as follows:
1. All That Jazz: I'm still trying to figure out if Jessica Lange was God or just the Angel of Death. Anyway, this movie came out in 1979, a month after my Mom died and I bawled like a baby. Still do! Great music and dance.
2. Wings of Desire: MUCH better than the sappy Hollywood remake. Depressing but beautiful film.
3. Far Away, So Close: The sequel to Wings of Desire. Excellent movie although I felt so bad for Cassiel. He just wasn't cut out to be human.
4. The Last Temptation of Christ: I never understood why people got so upset over this movie! I loved it because Jesus was portrayed as a REAL person with fears and doubts just like us.
5. Dogma: I know I'll probably get some hate mail for this choice but I thought it was funny ( a little TOO crude at times...) and seeing God portrayed as both a man AND a woman was even better.
6. The Bishop's Wife: Cary Grant as an angel! He was marvelous as was David Niven and Loretta Young.
7. A Christmas Carol (1984) w/ George C. Scott. In my humble opinion, one of the best versions of this oft repeated tale. 8. The Fifth Element: Although I cringed everytime someone in the film referred to Leeloo as the saviour of the world, I did like this film for it's visual style, music, story and humor.
9. The Matrix: Another great sci-fi movie but Keanu Reeves as the Saviour? I hardly think so. Keanu Reeves can't act his way out of a paper bag.
10. Godspell: I saw this originally on t.v. in the early 70's when I was four or five and loved it, even though at that time I didn't really understand it. I've got to get the re-release on video. I'm sure there's more I like but it's late and my brain is tired. God bless you! maura@rcia.com

PITCH BLACK DRAWS ATTENTION

PITCH BLACK REBIRTH

Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000
From: "Keith Beasley-Topliffe"

First, thanks for the site. I just found it yesterday, spent a fair amount of time exploring. Second, I hope you will have time to check out the movie Pitch Black. First, it's actually fairly decent sci-fi (as opposed to, say, Mission to Mars). More to your point, it is a movie about redemption. The main character is an escaped murderer being returned to prison by a bounty hunter. The most interesting arc in the film is how he is slowly drawn to more and more interaction with the other characters because of their need for help only he can give (his surgically altered eyes allow him to see in the dark). It is completed when another character dies trying to rescue him and he both recognizes his unworthiness of this sacrifice and accepts it as a call to rebirth.

"I BELIEVE IN GOD, IT'S JUST THAT I HATE HIM."
Subject: Pitch Black
Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000
From: Matt L

My wife and I went to see the movie today and had an overall thumbs up. The special effects were great! There is a great exchange between the Muslim priest and the main character Riddick that reveals a lot about people in our society who are angry at God. Riddick responds to the Priests assumption that he doesn't believe in God. He goes through the horrible events of his life and responds something like this, "I believe in God, I believe in God its just that I ____ Hate Him." I believe that there are many of us that believe people who are not religious or attending Church don't believe in Him. The fact is they are angry they have not seen Gods love for them, they believe He exists they just don't see Him through all the pain in their lives. The Priest responds to Riddicks taunting later in the movie when they are saved from the creatures as a testimony that Gods saves them. Also one of the last lines of the movie (and I am probably stretching this a little) the young girl asks what she should say when the authoities ask what happens to Riddick, Riddick says "We will tell them Riddick died on that planet." Sub-points= Fry shows the ultimate attitude of sacrifice. She has made it to safety without the girl and the Priest, Riddick is ready to take off but she stops him and tells him they are not leaving without the others. Riddick puts a knife to her throat and asks if she is willing to die for them, she says yes, then they go and save the others. Ultimately she gives her life for Riddick (the murderer) lets not get carried away here but it is an example of how Christ gave His life for everyone, even murders who hated Him. Wow there was more there than I thought!!! Thanks for the opportunity to share my thoughts! Matt L
Response: Thank you. Very insightful -David.

JESUS AND PITCH BLACK
Subject: Pitch Black Jesus Parrallels
Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000
From: "Matthew Muters"

I saw this film last week and the biblical parallels were so in you face. the whole "will you die for them?" question was put into contrast with the fact that the woman wanted to sacrifice the group to save her own hide in the beginning. For some reason it made me think of Jesus in the garden where he is saying "take this cup away from me" but in the end Jesus bent to the will of the Father. In such a way Fry went back after the two people she had left behind, I had expected her to die on that trip but when she got separated from Riddick on the trip back I thought then that Riddick was going to sacrifice himself for them and become the hero but the great ending where she is ripped from his hands, and they make you think that he stabbed her for a little bit there, man I am almost speechless. Then with Riddick's line, "you said you would die for them." but not for me, not for me. it was so powerful because that is so much how we react when we think about Christ dying for us, the whole idea is that we don't deserve it and neither did Riddick but Fry and Christ put their lives on the line because of love for the other. Fry's character was a good Jesus parallel but like any other metaphor or allegorical character she is not Christ. The grace of God comes only through Christ but this movie really points us to look at Christ and understand how we would feel if we were to find ourselves at the foot of the cross at the moment Christ died for us. Anyway I am looking forward to your review David. By the way I don't remember if I thanked you for your help on my class project I got an A and people are wanting to buy our resource. I am going through the process of writing permissions to find out if this is going to be possible.

Liked this movie--it's hard to talk about this film without giving away any spoilers. All I can say is that at one point, I thought that David Twohy was making an anti-God statement, but when the film completed, especially in the last five minutes, he was making a pivotal, pro-God, Christ-like parallel. I was elated.

NOT BAD FOR EVERYONE
Subject: Scream 3
Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000
From: Wendy

Hi! David, I know many Christians will probablly disagree with me, and that's fine. But I don't think scary movies are necessarily bad for everyone. I don't think scary movies are necessarily good for young children to watch, because they are usually very impressionable and often can't differenate between fantasty and reality (although some children can, which is good). I also think watching the same scary movie over and over again (whether you're a child or adult) isn't healthy either, because it can become almost an addiction, to the point where it can disensitise. But apart from those two things above, mostly I don't see any great harm in a group of friends getting together at someone's house for a sleepover and watching scary movies. I have many great times at friends places, sleeping over and watching scary movies. I think the reason why people like to watch scary movies, is because it's almost a safe kind of fear. In other words, even though a movie maybe scary and we get scared watching them, we also know that the baddie or whatever you want to call them, isn't going to jump out of the screen and attack them. Whereas, although most of us like to scare each other silly, by watching movies like Scream, we would never for example walk down a dark lane after midnight, because common sense tells us that it's not safe, and also there is that reality that you could get attack, which makes this a real fear oppose to that of a safe fear, when watching scary movies. I don't think fear is necessarily a bad thing either, because everyone fears something, whether it be spiders (which would include me), heights or whatever. It's when that fear takes over your life, to the point where it affects you, your family, your work or social life, that it can be a problem and that's the time to ask God to take away those fears.
kind regards, Wendy ps.

AMERICAN BEAUTY REMAINS INTERESTING

i read one of the commments questioning the validity of the rose petals. I believe Lester's fatuation with the rose petals existed because roses were the thing in which his embittered wife took such pleasure in. His fantasy/thought life involved the thing that would hurt his wife the most. just a thought...

ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW
Subject: American_Beauty another point of view, and some questions
Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000
From: wolske

OK, this may be a stretch, but I just saw American Beauty this week for the second time (the first time was when it first same out last fall). I'm brand new to your site - interesting perspectives and good discussion. The character that I most had a problem with after each time I saw it was Ricky. I'm surprised that some of the other writers here thought that he was the most 'human' of all the characters. I might suggest that he was the most 'human'/worldly, but in the worst possible way. If you haven't seen the film, you might not want to read on (possible spoilers)... Ricky makes a conscious decision to lie to his father about the nature of his relationship with Lester. Only the night before Jane suggested that Ricky kill her father (I know, she tells him that she's only kidding, but it almost seems like Ricky's only reality is what he sees through the lens of his camera - another comment on media-saturated society?) Anyhow, there is a look of realization on his face when he starts to lie to his father about the acts Lester made him perform. He fully intended to work his father into a rage that would cause him to kill Lester. And when Ricky leans over Lesters dead body, a perverse smile comes over his face. So here's my theory - Ricky is really Evil/Satan/ (whatever you want to call it). When he says he is overwhelmed by the beauty in the world (ie. plastic bag in the wind) it's because the beauty is an act of God, but he's overwhelmed because he (Satan) cannot create anything beautiful. Only God can create beauty/good, and Ricky is powerless to it. I'm assuming that God and the Devil are not on speaking terms, and when Ricky says he sees God in death (homeless person, bird, Lester's eyes) it's the Devil getting a glimpse of God and flipping him off - his perverse smirk into Lester's lifeless eyes kind of says "Ha Ha, here's another one of your beautiful creations that I've destroyed". Hopefully for the rest of us it can be a lesson to see the beauty of God in the world, I won't argue with that. But I think Ricky is a much darker character than some of the other reviews here contend. On the other hand, I don't think Lester was as bad as some people made him out to be. He genuinely tried to reach out to Jane early in the movie, and tried to reach out to his wife (on the couch, before she freaked out over the $2000 sofa). He came to his senses with Angela (albeit just in time). I still don't understand why Angela lied to him about how Jane was (said she was fine when she was running away with the devil) when her character seemed to have come clean of so many of the lies that made up her life. And what was the deal with Carolyn and the 'I will not be a victim' tapes/mantra? Was she ever a victim? Lester may have been a victim of his job and of Carolyn; Jane may have been a victim of distant parents and teen angst; Angela a victim of societal pressures/expectations. Maybe the writer/director wanted Carolyn to be a victim of society, but I couldn't feel for her at all - in fact the second time I saw the film I could barely stand to watch her at all. Like nails on a chalkboard... I think Carolyn's 'victim' mantra was actually a prediction - with Lester murdered and Jane gone, she can't keep up the illusion of her 'perfect' life and will be a victim of these cruel, random events. I still can't feel bad for her... As or Ricky, the only redeeming thing that he did was after he smiled at Lester he gasped, 'Mother!', showing real concern for what his father might do back at his house. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD, so I can give it another shot. See this movie, think about it, talk about it. Great site, keep up the good work.

Response: Welcome a board! I like the way you look for the little details. I do not agree with the Risky/Satan connection. Ricky seems to me to be the only "real" human in the picture. I will be interested in your thoughts after you analyze the DVD. -David.

AMERICAN BEAUTY IS EXCELLENT BECAUSE...
Subject: American Beauty Excellent Movie

From: Stephen

I thought the movie was great, and thought I should make a few comments in response to the comments, for the heck of it. First, I think the title is a bit sarcastic in some ways, but appreciative in others. And that in itself describes the movie. Here are some neat observations: Ricky tells Jane, while showing her the floating bag, that sometimes all the beauty in the world makes him think that his heart is about to cave in. At the end of the movie, Lester says that all the beauty in the world makes his heart want to burst. Kind of interesting to think about when comparing the characters.. Secondly, it's interesting to think about the ending you didn't see.. Who's going to get blamed for the killing?? More than likely, it will be Ricky and Jane. What do you think?? Finally, it is interesting to look at the two families as complete opposites of each other and notice how very similar they are. I think I liked the movie because it portrayed our middle-class American culture in such a way that I felt nostalgia for it even when I'm in the middle of it. You gotta love it..
Response: Yea, sad but true. -David.

IT'S ABOUT US!
Subject: american beauty
Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000
From: Becca

This film is not about "them", but about "us". Not about "out there" but about "in here". The movie demands our deepest participation, humilty, honesty and compassion. To use this challenging and deeply spiritual film to buttress our own complacency and sense of moral superiority is to miss the mark most grievously. The movie is both fiercely unsettling and devastatingly beautiful, not because it shows us what to avoid, but because it reminds us what to love. And it wounds us, not with just another pious indictment of the alienation, brutality and loneliness of American culture, but by asking us to see the aching, tender and profound loveliness at the heart of all things. Christians, you will never convert your neighbors if you don't love them first. And you can't love them if you pretend that your own heart is not broken, your own innocence not compromised a thousand times, your own lives uncomplicated by loneliness, frustration, dishonesty, greed and fear, your own families undamaged by disconnection, misunderstanding and betrayal. They won't believe you. They'll be right. At first viewing I thought this movie was ultimately about gratitude. The second time I saw it I thought it was about compassion. After seeing it three times I think it's about honesty and humility, from which both gratitude and compassion spring. I, too, am grateful for my stupid, blessed little life.

ARISTOTLE AND AMERICAN BEAUTY
Subject: american beauty
Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000
From: Russ

Dear all American Beauty is quite superb. I'd just like to add to Thomas' point. It is about the pursuit of happiness. IN fact the film is riddled with Aristotle who's most famous maxim is "life is the pursuit of happiness". The whole thing seems to hinge on Aristotle's ideas on accident and substance. The accidents of life are the nuts and bolts, the substance of life is where meaning is found. When the Burnhams begin to make-love again on the couch they begin to discover the beauty of marital substance. When they stop for fear of spilling beer on the couch they reject the substance of life for the accidents. The powerful challenge of the film lies in the beauty of meaning and to coin a phrase, if "you look really carefully at beauty, you'll see God staring back."

Dear David, I am a big fan of your website and really enjoy your indepth reviews of movies. It's refreshing to hear a Christian interpretation of movies such as "The Matrix" and "Magnolia." I was turned on to your site by the minister of newstreetchurch.com, Gordon Venturella. If I could, I would like to suggest their site to be included on your links page. Check it out. It's a really well designed and fun page with an edge. You can listen to audio sermons online given from a postmodern perspective, as well as original music. David, Forgive me if I'm wrong about this, but I am somewhat surprised to not see "The Winslow Boy" mentioned on your site. Was this an "over-site"? Or did I just miss it? Enquiring minds want to know, Jeff
My response: Hi Jeff, I wanted to this this film, but I never did. Perhaps, on video. I find it hard to keep up. Did you see the film? What did you think? Warmly David Bruce

Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000
David, Thanks for replying. I know how hectic your schedule is. Recently watched it on video and enjoyed it. One interesting picture: the film starts out with the boy who has "done wrong" hiding from his father in the garden. Good acting all around and an interesting story of the lengths a father will go to "redeem" his son. I think it would make a worthy addition to your ever wonderful site. By the way, our "prophetic arts" community group is doing well, in spite of early opposition to us (gasp!) going to movies as a church group. I used Ryken's book on Christianity and culture to set a foundation for why the arts have legitimacy. Any other material you can recommend would be appreciated.

INTERESTING DIALOGUE
Subject: Matrix "You pay your taxes...go to church..."
Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2000
From: Darren

First of all, I am thankful i have stumbled onto Hollywood Jesus. As a Christian and a film buff, it is a tough call for me when i defend certian aspects of film theory to my Christian friends and relatives. "the Matrix"-what can I say that already hasn't been said? All the biblical references, greek mythos, sci-fi & action picture homages were there. It seems that Matrix found an audience, while other related pictures around the film's theatrical release did not do that well. (such as the well done "eXistenZ") But there is an intersesting reference of dialogue said that your review-and other comments missed. When descibing everyday life (?) in the Matrix, Morpheus states to Neo that "you pay your taxes...go to church..." that said, there is no indication that "church" exists outside of the matrix, and as for Zion, its descrption is said to be at the heart of the earth's core. I'm not saying its so but the gist I got from this was A) Zion =underworld/hell B) Zion does not exist -thats how Morpheus could not be broken under the interrogation But more than likely, Zion does exist in the Matrix films-it simply has yet to be seen if at all. Also, I read some of the comments listed , and I think I can answer some questions, raise some points, and vise versa.Lets start with David Forsmark's comment about the R rating (interestingly enough, there is a reviewer for my local paper The Flint Journal by the same name....hmmmm) there are three reasons for this. First and foremost: any film that shows someone getting shot in the head is an automatic R,according to the MPAA. The lobby shootout alone could not get an R rating, although this is where the majority of onscreen violence occur. Other "deaths" have to do with ray guns/energy zaps, unplugging someone connected to the Matrix via the reality, and with the exception of Mouse, that's about it. Also contributing to the "R" rating= yes,Dave the F word WAS USED -its in the end credits, after Rage Against The Macine is over, "rock Is Dead" by Marlyn Manson kicks in. The F word is heard during this tune. Which brings us to the soundtrack. Not the well done score by Don Davis (which is also available on CD) but the music selections. Despite admiring the film, as a Christian,I too, dislike the majority of the music such as Manson,RATM, and Rob Zombie. I have "The Jackal" soundtrack; therefore I don't need Lunatic Calm's "leave You Far Behind" which appears on the s-track, but not the film, not to my knowledge. (IPersonal note:I detest this practice. Every snippet of music heard on a film's s-track should be heard in whole or in part in the running time of that film...) I can handle Prodigy and the Deftones if I really have to. Which leaves us with, oh, The Propellerheads "Spybreak Part One". This snippet of music is heard in the background of the lobby shoot out .If anyone likes this tune and DOES NOT want to get the s-track, look for "Deckdrumsandrockandroll" by this two-man tech/dance band. This CD also features "Take California" (the opening song in "Forces Of Nature") and "History Repeating " (some of you may have heard this tune while watching "Something About Mary"...if you eh,like that sort of movie) You can find this in the "dance"section of your local record store.Oh,one more thing. This version on the CD i mentioned is the LONG version. On another note,I too, caught some Buddism bits in this movie here and there, but reincarnaton is not one of them, since by this myth you come back as something organic, specifically a human being, not as a Duracell battery. A word about violence in films. This what I am about to say will be contreversial to most Christians who chance upon your site. Those of us who go to films/see videos do not really mind action pictures, esp.well done action pictures.Action/suspense pictures always have some kind of violence or description of violent acts.It is not Violence in films most people have a problem with.It is the EXCESSIVE violence with no remorse or without consequence. One final thought: demon possession parrells are not brung up in your comments or readers comments. An agent (such as Agent Smith) can possess spirit-like into the body of an unsuspecting, convienent, person. Darren J.Seeley darrenlives@AOL.com

SCOTT NYP'S TOP FILMS
Subject: My top films
Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000
From: "Scott Nyp"

Scott Nyp My top films are portrayals of the truth of God as revealed in Scripture, amplified through the medium of film.
1. Life Is Beautiful - The love the title character has for his son. He died to save his son's life. What a message of hope! I'm getting teary just thinking about it.
2. Les Miserables - The most beautiful picture of grace in film, is the Priest not only forgiving Valejean for his assault and theft, but also giving him more than he deserved... the candlesticks as well.
3. The Green Mile - Perhaps the best Christ figure that I can remember seeing in film..John Coffey.
4. Field of Dreams - A man's irrational pursuit of the impossible, made possible through supernatural guidance, and providence. A nice example of the Christian life.
5. Hoosiers - A David vs. Goliath for today. Also very touching is the redemption/forgiveness themes involving the Dennis Hopper character and his son.
6. Shawshank Redemption - Reminded me of the importance of hope in suffering.
7. Forrest Gump - Great all around film, however I especially love the scene where Forrest runs back into the jungles of VietNam, with bombs blowing up everywhere to save his friend Bubba. Such is Christ's love for us.
8. The Matrix - Very cool picture about spiritual warfare, and the unseen spiritual bondage that this world is under.
9. Footloose - You may think that this is a dumb pick, but as a teen at the time, I loved how this film identified the religious pharasaism, and hypocrisy in the church. Legalism vs. grace.
10. The Wizard of OZ - There is truly "no place like home." Stay on the path that God has provided for you, and you shall return home.

Dear brothers and sisters of The Holywood Jesus Website, Once again Christopher Walken plays the role of Gabriel, who once was an archangel, but now became a human being in the third sequence of this classical movie in its style. He still has some of his spiritual gifts intact but now as a man he learns to do human things,as well, like driving a car,for instance. Oh,I won't say more for now,but do watch Prophecy 3! People who already had the opportunity to see it said it's a great movie and Christopher Walken's performance is once again wonderful! The actor is a real blessing! PRESIDENTIAL SUBLIMINAL ADVERTISING
Subject: subliminal
Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 19:23:40 -0500
From: William Dean
Organization: The Holistic Sanctuary

Dear Mr. Bruce,
Your articles on Subliminal Advertising got me thinking about the Presidential Campaigns. The Bush Campaign is currently running an ad declaring McCain as anti-environmental. The press, of course, looked at the ad and scoffed that it was basically untrue, and was funded by "Republicans for Clean Air," which does not exist as an actual organization - it is basically a post office box.
So - here's the interesting part. The ad starts with McCain?s head in the foreground, a picture of his face in a frowning pose - superimposed over the sight of factory smoke stacks billowing black smoke. The smoke is in fact coming out of McCain's head! (Message: McCain is SCARY - he blows his stack - he has black smoke pouring from his skull!) The ad states "John McCain voted against clean air." The next shot is the name "Bush," with the letters hollowed out to allow blue sky and clouds to blow through in the background. (Message: Bush is FRESH, CLEAN). The next shot is the same factory with NO smoke and no McCain, yet it touts Bush as being for clean air (Message: Bush can make McCain GO AWAY). The next shots show people with canoes, (Message: Bush likes canoes -he's a FRIEND of the environment) and the next shot shows - and this is the best one - a bird sitting on a post. They bring in a shot of Bush's face, and it is the most bland, eyes squinting smile the candidate can muster. It slides in next to the bird, which is now singing on the post (Message: Bush is so GENTLE, he wouldn't disturb a bird!). The last shot is once again the name Bush hollowed out to show the silhouette of children holding hands walking in a line and dancing (Message: Bush is INNOCENT - Children love him!).
I have seen the ad here in Virginia on cable, and saw it run in NYC last week. What gets me is that it is the most effective subliminal messaging I have seen in a political campaign. It completely shows graphically what the Bush campaign can't articulate. I'm very surprised that McCain's camp hasn't raised a flag over this one. McCain has been in favor of environmental legislation, so that part of the ad is TOTALLY wrong, and Bush is the Governor of Texas, which includes Austin - recently named as the city with the WORST quality air in the nation! So, hand it to the Bush Campaign - they've got the brains and the moxy to hit their opponents below the belt and the public below the cerebral cortex!

I am glad to see all the responses to this AWFUL movie. First of all, this is what I got out of this stupid film: First half:Depressing.Everyone buys the farm Second half:Who's who and who's not Third: After all this, they try anew? Hey,here's a thought:The character played by Robin Williams is in hell. Think about it:when his friend ?son/(whoever) played by Cuba Gooding Jr. mentions God being "up there"...and they are "down there"...If heaven is above and Hell is below, and at no time is JESUS mentioned as the only way to get to heaven, isn't this movie at least slightly flawed? Also,if "heaven" for the lead character is bliss in a living art painting (ok,nice FX) and he at least gets his mutt back in good ol' Heaven, why not other members of the family? Well, since it is revealed that at least a good part of the characters are in fact another character (it is confusing!!) the bottom line:
DECEPTION! LIES! Reincarnate mumbojumbo! Gimme a break!

MAGNOLIA SPOKE TO ME AS AN ADDICT
Subject: Magnolia
Date: 5 Mar 2000
From: Gazzah

I just saw Magnolia yesterday and it really seemed to have a message for me. I'm an addict in a recovery program. The theme of lonely people struggling to deal with regrets and past actions while finding it difficult to relate to those close to them struck me in a very personal way, because it mirrors my own situation. The timing couldn't have been better, because I had just begun another relapse, and needed waking up. The lyrics of the song "it ain't gonna stop 'till you wise up" were quite poignant.

I'm still trying to find some spiritual dimension to life, and while not a Christian, I couldn't help feeling that some higher power got me into the movie theater that day.

Please don't post my e-mail address. Just sign me off as Gazza.
Response: God has his hand on your life. Thank you for getting into recovery. May prayer ifor you is that you will soon experience the joy of God. He loves you so very much. -David.

I'm lightly surprised that a review of this film is here. This film, of course,on its initial theatrical release, was spooled out within two other films about the sea monsters/aliens. While "Deepstar Six" still gathers dust on video shelves across the land,I am AMAZED that you did not have a listing review for "The Abyss" which contains a lot of symbolism,suspense,F/X and human drama, esp. Bud rescuing Lindsay from drowning. But THAt movie is not
in your listing....hmmm.... Instead, it's "Levithan" that gets the spotlight.Hmmmmm.... You mention this film having parrells to "alien"-but I think a better film to compare it to is "The Thing"-John Carpenter's remake.

END TIMES MOVIE? GATTACA IS GREAT STUFF ANYWAY!
Subject: Gattaca
Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2000
From: Darren

I loved this movie. Yes, the religious themes in it are hard to miss (please note that the writer-director of Gattaca is Andrew Niccol; he also penned The Truman Show another film which has strong religous themes!) I am surprised, however, that when this film came out in theatres, most everyone missed it. Yes,I too like sci-fi action films. Gattaca was and is a nice and interesting departure.

"The First shall be last,The last shall be first"

One of the best things about the film was not only the suspense of the main character being caught, but that under his own merits and under stress he did his job well. But if he did not pretend to be a "valid" he would be considered less than human, and could not have the job. When the murder mystery kicks in,it also made a good whodunit. We are told that "it is impossible" for a invalid to pose as a valid (although it is stated by those helping the hero that this sort of thing is common) and its "unlikely" that a valid could "murder" ,and that the brother born natually could "die by thirty" when his genetic enhanced brother almost drowns! By films end,he goes into space as himself, nt as the person he was posing as. No one seemed to care that much.

Also, what do you think? All it would have taken is a polish on the script here and there- and you'd have something like a End-times movie . I know the sequel "escape from LA" made a big issue of the mark of the beast without much payoff. I'm not saying
Gattaca should have been an end times flick,I'm just saying it is strongly implied, though not directly.

BLADE RUNNER DIFFERENT IN VARIOUS CUTS
Subject: Blade Runner-How about the director's cut?
Date: Sat, 4 Mar 2000
From: Darren

I note your film review does not take into account the history of the film. As most everyone knows by now,"Blade Runner" has been restored with the voice over narration completey removed. also, the old video version (THE EUROPEAN VERSION) had a few minutes of extra violence-including the scene when Roy kills Tyrell. In the "director's Cut" (available in widescreen) this scene is not as bloody. Also, there is the implication that Deckard himself is a Replicant (a Nexus 7?) And dreams of Unicorns.
You mentioned the eye motif. What about the setting of BR being a (borderline) Police State/Big Brother? ("if your'e not cop, your'e little people") (Your' licenses in order")and so on. As for Batty, check out the scene after he kills Tyell (and supposedly,Sebastian) riding down in the elevator, he is not only desending, but "falling from the stars".
Also, the "happy ending/escape to the countryside" is not on BR:DC. I have both the old film (the unrated European version) and the WS Director's cut on video. With the former in pan and scan/cropped, its almost as if they are two different movies, yet still the same.

I found it interesting the way some sort of image or concept of God made it into a few of the segments. Certainly the buck in the Firebird, breathes life into the world (through a spirit). In both the Beethoven piece (with butterflies) and the whate segment often used a motif of a beam of light that called the creatures up to life or to new levels of being.

All this in an especially well crafted movie. You're right, it is a class by itself.

Hi I am a forteen year old from El Paso. I was raised in the church my whole life and am a Christian. The people at my church have never said anything about pokemon being evil and I don't think they are either. Pokemon is not real. It is just a game. Make believe. It is not evil. There are lots of good things about it. It teaches kids stratigy, winning and losing, and about friendship. You people never pay attention to the show long enough to understand its good points. You just take one look and try to find as much bad stuff about it as you can. So far have you heard anything about people who play pokemon going out and joining cults and things like that? I think you should devote your time to bashing things that really deserve bashing, like gangs, drugs, and barney. Leave pokemon alone.
Response:I am with you, real evil is often over looked. Pokemon should be the least of our worries. But, to hear some people go on about it -you would think it was Satan incarnate. -David.
MOVIE MADE RAJA OPEN THE BIBLE
Subject: Jacobs Ladder The Ladder
Date: Sat, 4 Mar 2000
From: Rafa

DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE. I first saw this movie several years ago, and, apparently, missed half the important stuff. I just watched it for the second time and so much more became clear to me. I know virtually nothing about the Bible, but looked up some of the character's names to try to understand the movie better. Jezebel, I found out, was the bitter foe of Elijah (one of Jacob's son's [in the movie]). Her name is often used to refer to an evil woman in literature. Gabriel is the angel who appears on Judgment Day, the day the dead are resurrected and sinners are sent to hell and the righteous are sent to heaven. Jacob is trying to come to terms with the events of his life: the death of his son, an affair with Jezebel - which is probably the reason for the demise of his marriage - and the effects of the ladder. Since Jacob initially doesn't understand the reason for his death, the angels that try to take him away initially appear to be demons, as Louis suggests. But once he figures it out, he asks the cab driver to take him home. Where does the cabbie take him? To the apartment where Gabriel leads him up the stairs to heaven. And the doctors in Vietnam comment on the peaceful look on his face and what a fight he put up. I'd appreciate any comments on this interpretation, as I'm writing this within minutes of seeing the movie for only the second time. -- Rafa.
Response:God works in a variety of ways. And God is working in you. Thank you for your for sharing your experience. -David.
OLAN'S TOP FILMS
Subject: My_blank_Films Here's some fresh ones:
Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000

A few unlikely movies that are extremely spiritual:
Fight Club. Yes, this was a spiritual movie. It had some ideas in it that I, personally, did not pick up, but the obvious one was to think for yourself and truth and happiness will follow. It also had a pretty heavy anti-materialistic idea behind it. "You are not your job. You are not how much money you have in the bank," and so on.

Dogma: Theologically challenging. Black apostles and swearing angels. Nonetheless, it brings God to a level that we can relate with and opens up new ideas (things such as Mary and Joseph having sex, angels enjoying alcohol and jaded Catholics, how shocking!). It also shows that even people who may not LOOK or even act "good" can be (Jay and Silent Bob, for example).

The Matrix: An allegory for each and every religion in existence. Says that our world is not what we think it is and there's another, more important one hiding behind it and, also, that sometimes a common man will bring so much change with him. I think that's almost every religion wrapped up right there!!

Star Wars: Yep, I have to mention it too. Obvious messages and ideas.

American Beauty: A man is tired with his life and seeks change by following his heart, his wants and needs. Yet another "follow your heart" movie, but with a twist. In this one, our protaganist dies at the hands of someone ELSE "following his heart."

Magnolia: Sort of like Jerry Springer with a heart. The movie ends with a closeup of a cocaine-addict smiling at the shy words of her clumsy police-officer suitor, pretty much saying that it'll be ok. It's a good movie showing how people's actions effect each other in profound and lasting ways.

Please keep up the good work! . America is not the country it used to be. It was founded by God loving and God fearing people, which is why it became THE most blessed country in the world. America needs to be revived back to the TRUTH of the gospel. The word of God says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. But for some time now America has chose to make decisions based on man's reasoning and not on God's truth, thus putting a blind eye to His warnings to those who turn their backs on His ways and word. America has become foolish in it's ways, and has begun to feal His reproach. But, thanks to God's mercy our country can still be spared His wrath. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure that what ever films are made that they depict the TRUTH of His word, and not some "watered down" or perverted version of the truth. There are ALOT of "religions" out there. Many of which are Satan's extreme distortion of God's truth, thus being evil. Having those in the film making business learning about "religion" so that they can put what they learned and or believe into their films can lead to dangerous results. God's truth is AWESOME! It brings peace to the tormented, joy to the sorrowful, retores relationships, heals hearts, brings healing to the sick, justice where there is injustice, hope where there is no hope. and even makes the impossible possible. There is NO end to His power, and what he desires to do for those who truly love and obey Him. But, to sway from the TRUTH of His ways and words can be the thing that brings America to it's fatal blow. The best way to truly KNOW God/Jesus is to experience Him as Lord, savior, and redeemer. He says that ALL who call upon His name with a humble heart and desire to know Him, He will reveal Himself to. Those who truly desire to know the truth WILL find it. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to His people, and for giving those of us who would never have a chance otherwise to be heard in these issues.
