![]() The demise of marital relationships on earth is causing God great concern. The angels need to do a better job of matchmaking. Review By David Bruce A Life Less Ordinary (1997) Roger Ebert says: |
"Life Less Ordinary'' is from the team that gave us "Shallow Grave'' and "Trainspotting,'' so maybe it's a penance that their characters this time are angels and lovers, rather than body snatchers and druggies. See, ma? We're good lads at heart. Robert: Ewan McGregor, Celine: Cameron Diaz, Naville: Ian Holm, Angel Jackson: Delroy Lindo, Angel O'Reilly: Holly Hunter, Chief angel Gabriel: Dan Hedaya. |
Directed by Danny Boyle. Written by John Hodge. Running time: 90 minutes. Rated R (for violence and language).
| The movie opens up in heaven in the very white offices of Chief Angel Gabriel. The offices have all the modern conveniences of the 1940's and no Microsoft computers anywhere. The demise of marital relationships on earth is causing God great concern. The angels need to do a better job of matchmaking. It seems that marriages are really made in heaven. Gabriel assigns two angels (Jackson and O'Reilly) to bring together a couple, Robert and Celine, in holy matrimony. The problem is that Robert has kidnapped Celine, the very person that God has intended for him. The angels are sent to do this impossible task by Gabriel, whose boss, God, cannot accept any more failed relationships. |
It is a surprisingly enjoyable film. I won't give away all the fun between the opening and the closing. But, in the end they do get together. This involves the "death" and "resurrection" of Robert because of a bullet through his heart. Gabriel calls God on the telephone (prayer) and God is willing to grant a miracle to save the relationship. Robert is "born again" with the manifestation of inner light coming from the hole in his chest. Everybody wins and God is happy.
