The Gospel According to Speed Racer

After watching the latest trailer for the upcoming film Speed Racer, I can safely say that it's one of the most anticipated movies of the year for me right after The Dark Knight. In fact, I think this could be the sleeper hit of the season, the film that surprises everyone by raking in more than the other big-name blockbusters jockeying for boxoffice supremecy. In fact, I think Speed Racer may have the same effect at the boxoffice that the other well-known Wachowski film had: The Matrix.

Here's my reasoning on this. Let's be honest; although Speed Racer still has a devout fan base (the Wachowskis among them), it's not a well known property like Batman or Iron Man or Indiana Jones or Narnia. People just aren't as familiar with Speed Racer as some of those other franchises, and therefore it may not garner as much attention initially. It's kinda like when The Matrix released; everyone was really waiting for Star Wars Episode I. We didn't know much about this other film, but it looked interesting and definitely had a unique flair and style. However, after The Matrix released and everyone saw what the Wachowskis could do, suddenly The Phantom Menace was more of a phantom than a menace. I believe the same could happen with Speed Racer. People may only see it a something that looks mildly interesting or at least interesting visually, but after this film releases and we all see what the Wachowskis have done, it may just outrace everything out there.

People may not know much about Speed Racer now, but if the story and the characters hold up as well as the ground-breaking visuals, this could be the buzz movie of the summer. The Wachowskis are once again pushing the envelope by taking anime and mixing it with live action and digital effects. Make no mistake, this is something we haven't seen before, and when you can successfully pull that off people are going to take notice. More importantly, they're going to tell their friends. Better yet, if the Wachowskis get the rating they're shooting for (they've said all along they want a family friendly PG rating), this film could potentially have a much wider audience then the other PG-13 fare of the usual summer blockbusters. We're talking the Cars audience all the way up to fans of The Matrix.

If the trailers are showing merely a taste of what Speed Racer has to offer instead showing all their cards at once, it just may cross the finish line ahead of all those other heavy hitters this summer and surprise a lot people. Here's hoping the Wachowskis can pull off another Matrix instead of a Matrix Revolutions.
