“Hi, my name is Sean Wong. I’m the writer and director of “Dìdi,” which premiered in the US dramatic competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
“‘Dìdi’ means “little brother” in Mandarin, but it’s also a very endearing term that many Chinese parents use for their younger sons.
“Our movie is a portrait of adolescence as seen through the lens of a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy. In the last month of summer before his freshman year of high school, he learns many things that his family isn’t able to teach him, including how to skateboard, flirt, and appreciate his mom. This is our way of expressing that underneath the joy and chaos of adolescence is a complicated and turbulent but ultimately tender relationship story between this boy and his immigrant mom as they struggle to understand each other despite their cultural and generational differences.
“The very initial seed of this idea was: What if you took a movie like “Stand By Me” but set it in a place that I know and had it star people who looked, talked, and felt like the kids I grew up with?
“It’s my hope that by rooting the audience in this young boy’s perspective – one that I think hasn’t really been explored before in movies of this kind – we can create something that may evoke familiar emotions but ultimately feels like something audiences have never seen before.
