AFTER THE HUNT (2025) There Are Numerous Thought-Provoking Questions

‘After the Hunt’ is a 2025 psychological thriller film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Nora Garrett. Starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloë Sevigny, the film follows Alma, a college professor caught in a complex situation involving a sexual abuse accusation against one of her students and a colleague, while also grappling with her own questionable beliefs and addictions. The film runs just over two hours and raises significant questions from various perspectives.

Julia Roberts portrays an educator at Yale University. The narrative explores her relationship with a colleague and one of her prized students, played beautifully by Ayo Edebiri. The film features outstanding performances, with each actor delivering brilliant portrayals. Given the serious subject matter centered around sexual abuse and rape, the drama unfolds dramatically, prompting deep reflection on what is truly at stake.

Although the score by Trent Reznor deviates from his typical style, it enhances the film’s quality and suits the story it tells. If you’re expecting a light-hearted Julia Roberts film, this is not it. Roberts delivers an exceptional performance deserving an Oscar nomination, even if she isn’t my personal favorite in that category. While the film has received mixed reviews, I found it to be quite rewarding.

There are numerous thought-provoking questions, especially related to honesty and the consequences of one’s actions. Each character has their own issues, which slowly come to light throughout the film. It also raises questions about faithfulness and marriage—what happens to a relationship when honesty is lacking? Sometimes, people act out of ignorance or misunderstanding their options, believing they are justified, yet they still face consequences. I discussed this topic recently over lunch with my son, who is a single father raising his two-year-old daughter after the unfortunate death of his wife from cancer. As a father striving to fulfill both parenting roles, it’s essential to find balance while teaching my granddaughter about consequences. This film illustrates that certain mindsets have long evaded this lesson, showcasing the characters’ struggles, successes, and failures in a refreshing manner.

While ‘After the Hunt’ is undeniably a serious drama, it is engaging and not tedious. Though the audience may have questions, most will be addressed over time.

We live in a world reminiscent of an old Toby Keith song, where it often feels like it’s all about “me.” However, ‘After the Hunt’ demonstrates that our lives and actions can significantly impact others, whether we realize it or not. This raises the question: Is it truly all about me, or should I be concerned about how my actions affect others?

I want to give special recognition to Michael Stuhlbarg, who plays Robert’s husband in the film. On the surface, this psychologist and cooking enthusiast might be easily overlooked, but I believe he is a serious Oscar contender for Best Supporting Actor. His character, who struggles with loneliness and intimacy issues (including a brief scene where he falls asleep watching porn), delivers an outstanding performance, as do the other actors in this film.

The movie is in theaters this weekend, and if you’re looking for a serious drama that provokes thought, it might just satisfy your desires.

On a scale of 1 to 10 for the film’s quality and thought-provoking aspects, I would rate ‘After the Hunt’ a solid 7.
