MARTY SUPREME (2026): Comedy, Drama, and the Spirit of Competition

Marty Supreme is a 2025 American sports comedy-drama film directed by Josh Safdie and written by Ronald Bronstein. Timothée Chalamet stars in the lead role, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher in supporting roles. Darius Khondji shot the film on 35 mm film, and Safdie’s regular collaborator Daniel Lopatin composed its score. The film features an original story loosely based on the life of American table tennis player Marty Reisman.

As a former Midwest States Collegiate Champion, I still feel confident in my ability to play this game, even at 67 years of age. I was quite good in my prime and although I’m not at the same level now, I still understand the game well. My love for table tennis grew from serving months of detention at school and spending time at a YMCA shelter, where I had little to do but play. I knew of Marty Reisman and have always wanted to see a film about table tennis, especially with Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow starring. They both deliver exceptional performances, as they always do.

This film excels in all technical aspects, including script, screenplay, editing, and direction. Its only significant flaw is the challenge of making table tennis exciting for theatergoers. While enthusiasts like me will appreciate the sport, I wonder if those who view it as merely a child’s game, and have never seen a world-class match, will feel the same way. I fear it will be difficult to attract the audience it deserves, which is unfortunate.

The film explores many thought-provoking themes, including humility, hard work, and the pursuit of one’s dreams, even when faced with discouragement from those who know you best. We also learn that actions can have consequences, even if those actions seem justified.

Interestingly, this reminds me of the parable Jesus taught in Matthew 25 about the talents He provides. In that story, the importance of using one’s talents appropriately is emphasized. We are responsible for how we utilize these gifts, especially as it relates to helping others. Many people quote Matthew 25:31-46, but we should not forget that verses 1-30 are also contextually important.

In Marty Supreme, we see these themes portrayed on screen. Marty knows what he wants and stays focused on using his gifts and talents in table tennis, despite distractions from the world around him and his circle of acquaintances. In a compelling way, this movie resonates with the struggles highlighted in Matthew 25:1-30.

While this is not a groundbreaking sports story, it is very good, and I encourage people to give it a chance. Look beyond the screen, consider the deeper messages, and reflect on personal applications in your own life. For that reason, I am giving this film a hearty score of 8 out of 10.
