“CAUGHT STEALING” is a 2025 American crime thriller produced and directed by Darren Aronofsky. While this may be exciting for some, I believe he has had his share of disappointments. The film stars Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bad Bunny, Griffin Dunne, and Carol Kane.
Produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Protozoa Pictures, “Caught Stealing” was released in the United States by Sony Pictures on August 29, 2025. The film has received positive reviews from critics, but I wonder what this critic will think.

Regarding Austin Butler, he is a tremendous actor who is deserving of his Oscar nomination for “Elvis” and is also a box office draw. He impressed me in this film, despite the trailers looking good. In this movie, his character, Henry/Hank, finds himself in difficult situations as he tries to get his life in order. It is challenging for Hank, a bartender with a troubled past, as he grapples with his struggle with alcohol. However, he demonstrates that with the right reasons and at the right time, hope and change are possible. Maintaining composure in the face of adversity is another significant challenge.

Hank gets into a bad situation while trying to help a punk rock neighbor who has become involved with some dangerous people. Unbeknownst to Hank, as he watches his neighbor’s apartment and cat, things take a drastic and difficult turn—not just for him, but for those around him. This concept effectively illustrates that our actions have a profound impact on others, often in negative ways. Some may ask, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” In a somewhat simplistic manner, Jesus in the Bible answers, “Yep!”

We all face difficulties in life, but how will we persevere? Sometimes we need help from friends, family, and even a divine source that some may refer to as God. We should learn, just as Hank does, that sometimes doing things our own way isn’t the best approach and that difficult consequences don’t just vanish.
Despite its good themes, I was disappointed in this movie. I felt the plot and characters could have been better developed. We barely get to know some of the characters, which makes it hard to care about them. The movie could have benefited from an additional 20 minutes for character development, but it didn’t. Characters are introduced but often lack enough screen time for us to connect with them, making the action film feel dull.

While the film does address themes of honesty, keeping one’s word, and fighting for what’s right, much of its potential was either left on the cutting room floor or not included in the final edit. However, I’m just a regular moviegoer who enjoys watching films.
On a scale of 1-10, while not horrible, but was still a let down for me, so I give Caught Stealing a disappointing 5
