“Eden” is a 2024 American survival thriller film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. Directed by Ron Howard and written by Noah Pink, the film is based on a story created by Pink and Howard. It stars Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl, Felix Kammerer, Toby Wallace, and Richard Roxburgh. The movie is inspired by the true story of European settlers arriving at Floreana Island in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador.
The film follows the early settlers of the area and revolves around three groups and their experiences on the island. Coexisting with limited resources proves to be more challenging than initially imagined. Not only do they face natural difficulties of existing in an unexplored land, but interpersonal relationships also become strained, particularly when one group appears to have questionable intentions and self-serving interests.
Eden reminded me, in some respects, of the Oscar-winning film “The Piano”. Relationships among the groups develop while on the island, but when a group’s malicious intent becomes apparent, things take a turn for the worse. The film explores universal truths related to honesty, theft, pride, and much more. The themes of family and relationships resonate deeply. Each individual holds equal value, but they serve different roles within the community. When they unite, they can achieve much, but when individual pride and self-interest interfere, it creates conflicts that contradict societal needs—similar to issues we face in today’s world, where many focus solely on themselves. This dynamic is even reflected within the church, where Jesus makes it clear that we are referred to as family, reminding us that we are all brothers and sisters.
I loved almost everything about this film. Ron Howard does a fantastic job directing, the cinematography is phenomenal, and the casting and acting are spot on. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this film discussed in upcoming Oscar conversations.
In a season filled with action blockbusters, it’s refreshing to experience an enjoyable, thought-provoking historical drama on screen. While not perfect in every way, it comes very close. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give “Eden” a 9.
Where to stream: It can be watched on Tubi, Fandango at Home, Plex, The Roku Channel, Prime Video, and Apple TV. It’s also available on Tubi and Plex for free.
