RENTAL FAMILY (2025): Heartfelt Moments and Life Lessons with Brendan Fraser

“Rental Family” is a 2025 comedy-drama film directed by Hikari. It stars Brendan Fraser as an American actor living in Japan who starts working for a rental family agency, where he fills various hired acting roles for clients. The film is a co-production between the United States and Japan.

Since much of the film takes place in Japan, it features closed captioning to help viewers follow along. Despite this, the storyline remains easy to follow, and Fraser’s performance is, as many would say, outstanding. He plays Phillip, a struggling American actor trying to make a name for himself in Japan, and we see his challenges unfold. As he takes on an unusual role with a unique agency, he develops connections with the people he portrays, particularly as a father figure, to help a young girl get enrolled in a prestigious private school. The film reminds me of “Deuce Bigalow” with its odd assortment of characters, each with their own intricate personalities. Throughout the process, Phillip reveals his humanity, genuinely caring for those he is hired to represent.

Several storylines are explored, but Phillip is most drawn to his role as a father to a young Japanese girl. He finds fulfillment in these roles, just as the characters he portrays benefit from his companionship. While “Rental Family” includes various elements, it’s the acting and raw emotion that elevate it into high-quality, thought-provoking entertainment.

The film emphasizes the significance of friendships and the value of loving family dynamics. It highlights the importance of the family unit and how the difference we make in the lives of others ultimately impacts our own lives. This theme reminds me of the Golden Rule found in many world religions: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” By following this principle, we can make the world a better place and learn to care for others.

I really enjoyed the movie because it illustrates the changes we can bring about in our own lives. Ultimately, we see not just the development of a rental family but the growth of genuine connections that go beyond blood relations.

On a scale of 1 – 10, this was an entertaining film worth watching and deserving of a 7
