Roman Catholics Move Toward Inclusion of LGBTQ+ and Women

A recent Vatican document addresses the need for a more inclusive and participatory church. Cardinal Mario Grech, the synod’s general secretary, emphasizes the importance of a synodal church that can effectively proclaim the gospel and engage with humanity.

The document is praised by the Catholic LGBTQ advocacy group New Ways Ministry for its language and inclusivity. The use of “LGBTQ+” in the document demonstrates a respect for the preferred terms of the LGBTQ+ community and a broader recognition of various gender and sexual identities.

The Vatican document also acknowledges the need for greater women’s participation in the Church’s governance, decision-making, mission, and ministries. It explicitly mentions the possibility of female deacons, which would allow women to preach and preside at Mass but not perform sacraments like consecrating hosts, performing marriages, or hearing confessions.

Casey Stanton, co-director of Discerning Deacons, views the document as a historic opportunity for the Church. Stanton highlights the significant roles that women already occupy within the Church, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and empowering their contributions.

Overall, the Vatican document signals a desire for a more inclusive and participatory Church, addressing the concerns of the LGBTQ+ community and recognizing the important roles of women while considering the possibility of female deacons.
