SPLITSVILLE (2025): Repercussions of Actions

“Splitsville” is a 2025 American comedy film that follows two couples whose friendship unravels into conflict when the husband of a couple anticipating an unexpected divorce sleeps with the wife of a friend in an open marriage. The film is directed by Michael Angelo Covino and features a cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, Kyle Marvin, Covino, Nicholas Braun, and others.

The subject matter of this film may not be suitable for everyone, and it comes with a deserving ‘R’ rating. Although it is well-acted and features some likable characters, it presents itself as a comedy that explores the dramatic consequences of its characters’ actions, even when those actions occur among friends and were initially considered acceptable.

I particularly appreciated Kyle Marvin’s performance as Carey. Though he hasn’t appeared in many roles, he effectively balances confusion and drama with humor. The conflict between the four main characters is well-executed, prompting viewers to have strong opinions about each character’s rights, wrongs, and the consequences of their decisions.

Many recent movies seem to focus on the repercussions of actions, which is a key theme here. This theme not only affects the four primary characters but also extends to the unforeseen consequences faced by a young son as he observes the issues involving his parents and a teacher.

The film certainly includes strong sexual themes, and while some may choose not to watch it, the consequences depicted on screen contribute to the conversation about what constitutes appropriate sexual behavior. This is particularly relevant in a real-world context, where traditional norms and beliefs appear to be fading daily. What is considered normal? What is expected in a marriage? Is it possible to commit to a monogamous relationship in today’s world, and if so, how challenging is it to remain faithful? Are people hurt in the process? Does the act of sex have implications that extend beyond what we commonly recognize?

To be honest, there were moments in the film where I felt uncomfortable with the events unfolding on-screen, but I still found the questions raised to be valuable. Is this a movie for everyone? No! However, is it a film that those engaged in sexual activity should reflect on concerning the themes presented? In many ways, yes! I found it to be worthwhile and better than I initially anticipated.

On a scale of 1 to 10, considering its thought-provoking nature and the enjoyment of watching Kyle Marvin perform, I would give this film a score of 6.5, which is above average.
