TRON: ARES (2025): A Surprisingly Spiritual Theme

“TRON: Ares” is a 2025 American science fiction action film directed by Joachim Rønning. It is the third installment in the TRON series and serves as a sequel to “Tron: Legacy” (2010). The cast features Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jeff Bridges, who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn from the earlier films.

I have to admit, I hadn’t seen any of the previous TRON movies, but after this experience, I find myself wanting to go back and watch them.

This futuristic science fiction film is packed with special effects, showcasing marvelous writing, cinematography, and a surprisingly spiritual theme. The imagery in the trailers hints at storylines that parallel scripture regarding the creation of the universe and the need for a savior. Notably, Jared Leto resembles contemporary portrayals of Jesus. The musical score, created by Nine Inch Nails, further emphasizes themes of salvation and a fallen world.

The storyline presents a conflict where evil, disguised as good, seeks to create disruption and destruction through beings that resemble humans but are, in fact, creations that obey the directives of one of the original creators of this digital world. Meanwhile, human scientists access a program that recognizes these beings, particularly one named Ares, which means “God.” Ares sees the potential for good in the human race and understands the dangers that arise if the evil beings gain control.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well the story flowed and how it kept my attention throughout the nearly two-hour film. We witness humans eventually placing their faith and confidence in Ares, but there are still battles to be fought and lives to be saved. Ares must sacrifice his own life to provide salvation, but, true to the archetype of a Messiah, he experiences a resurrection moment to save the world and defeat evil. Throughout this journey, he learns important lessons in a sort of heavenly realm from a father or God figure.

“TRON: Ares” exceeded my expectations—especially considering that I’m quite picky, and I usually don’t enjoy most science fiction films. I was genuinely surprised by how entertaining it was. Therefore, on a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate it a solid 7 for its visually stunning elements. I watched it in 3D, but I recommend saving the extra cost and watching it on a good digital screen instead. If you see it, let me know your thoughts!
