What they share, beyond desperation, is a Polish heritage and the thin thread of humanity that survives even here. Through quiet acts of service<strong>, empathy, and prayer,<\/strong> Kolbe becomes a steadying presence. The film shows how small gestures\u2014a hand on a shoulder, whispered prayers, a moment reminiscent of Ash Wednesday\u2014can knit strangers into a community, even in a starvation bunker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Yes, this is a low-budget EWTN production<\/strong>, and you can see the seams: there are <strong>no marquee names,<\/strong> and the performances are workmanlike rather than dazzling<strong>. This film restores some of that weight. I saw it at a sold-out matinee in a mainstream theater, where the crowd was <strong>a rare mix of Jews and Catholics<\/strong>, many of whom were older than me (and I\u2019m 66).
