IN MEMORIAM: POPE FRANCIS (1936–2025)A true bridge builder

Shepherd of Mercy, A Voice for the Marginalized

A The world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, the 266th Bishop of Rome and the first pontiff from the Americas, who died peacefully at the Vatican in 2025 at the age of 88. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he made history not only for where he came from — but for how he led.

Elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis became a transformative and deeply human figure, embodying humility, compassion, and courage in the face of a rapidly changing world. From the moment he stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and asked the crowd to pray for him, he signaled a papacy that would be both grounded and radically open-hearted.

A HUMBLE SHEPHERD

The son of Italian immigrants and a former nightclub bouncer turned Jesuit priest, Pope Francis lived simply — famously residing in a modest guesthouse rather than the Apostolic Palace and shunning luxury vehicles for a humble Ford Focus. He preached by example: washing the feet of prisoners, visiting refugee camps, and embracing the sick and poor with tenderness and without cameras.

His pontificate was defined by the message of mercy. Whether it was reaching out to LGBTQ+ Catholics with the question, “Who am I to judge?” or calling for a Church that is “a field hospital after battle,” he constantly urged the faithful to prioritize compassion over condemnation, accompaniment over exclusion.

A GLOBAL CONSCIENCE

Pope Francis was not afraid to speak out. He became a global moral voice on issues ranging from climate change and economic inequality to war, migration, and the dignity of all human life. His encyclical Laudato Si’ (2015) became a landmark call for ecological justice, urging humanity to care for “our common home” and reminding world leaders that the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor are one and the same.

He built bridges with other religions, advocated for interfaith dialogue, and continued the Church’s journey of reconciliation with the Jewish and Muslim communities. He championed peace in places of conflict and lent the moral weight of his office to diplomacy rooted in justice and human dignity.

A LEGACY OF LISTENING

Though his time as pope was not without controversy or resistance — especially from traditionalist corners — Pope Francis never claimed to have all the answers. What he offered instead was a Church that listens, that journeys with the wounded and the searching, and that always returns to the radical message of the Gospel: love.

He opened discussions on previously unthinkable topics, encouraged synodality (shared governance), and prioritized the voices of women, the poor, and the young. He urged Catholics not just to preserve doctrine, but to encounter others with empathy.

FAREWELL TO A SERVANT OF SERVANTS

As the bells toll for Pope Francis, the world remembers a pontiff who led not with pomp but with presence. His laughter, his candor, and his gentleness — often expressed with a simple wave, an embrace, or an unexpected phone call — touched millions beyond the Catholic Church.

He leaves behind not only a papal legacy, but a deeply human one: a reminder that holiness lies not in distance from the world, but in being fully present to it — especially to those on the margins.

May he rest in peace, and may his vision of a more merciful, listening, and loving Church continue to inspire the generations to come.
