LOCK NESS (2017 TV Mini-Series): A Well Done Crime Story Set in the Scottish Highlands

Synopsis

Lock Ness is a six-part crime drama set in the Scottish Highlands. The series follows the investigation into the murders of two people in the small town of Lochnafoy, which is located on the shores of Loch Ness. The murders are particularly gruesome, with one victim having their prefrontal cortex removed via their nasal cavity. The investigation is led by Detective Sergeant Annie Redford (Laura Fraser), who is also dealing with the fallout from a prank her teenage daughter Evie (Holly Aird) pulled that involved spreading animal remains near the water to resemble a giant amphibious creature’s carcass.

The cast of Lock Ness includes:

  • Laura Fraser as Detective Sergeant Annie Redford
  • Siobhan Finneran as Chief Inspector Lauren Quigley
  • Steven Cree as Blake Albrighton
  • John Sessions as James Penwarden
  • Robin Soans as Harry Redford
  • Holly Aird as Evie Redford

John McKay directs the series.

Premiere Date

Lock Ness premiered on Acorn TV on June 19, 2017.

Story Plot

The story of Lock Ness begins with the discovery of the body of Niall Swift, a piano teacher in Lochnafoy. He has been murdered in a gruesome fashion, with his prefrontal cortex removed via his nasal cavity. The investigation into his murder leads Detective Sergeant Annie Redford to believe that there may be a serial killer on the loose.

Shortly after Swift’s murder, a human heart is discovered among the animal remains that Evie Redford and her friends used to create a fake Nessie carcass. This raises questions about whether Evie could be involved in the murders, and it also puts a strain on her relationship with Annie.

As the investigation progresses, Annie and her team uncover a web of secrets and lies in Lochnafoy. They soon realize that murders are not the only thing that the town hides.

Laura Fraser is excellent as Detective Sergeant Annie Redford, and she is supported by a strong cast that includes Siobhan Finneran, Steven Cree, and John Sessions. The plot is suspenseful and keeps you guessing until the very end, and the setting of the Scottish Highlands is beautifully captured.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about Lock Ness is the way that it explores the themes of community, family, and facing your fears. The people of Lochnafoy are initially reluctant to cooperate with the police investigation, but they eventually come together to help solve the murders. This shows the importance of community in times of crisis. Annie Redford and her daughter Evie have a strained relationship at the beginning of the series, but they eventually come to rely on each other as they deal with the aftermath of the murders. This shows the power of family in times of adversity. Annie Redford is initially afraid of the Nessie legend, but she eventually faces her fears in order to solve the murders.
