She’s back, and this time she faces a worthy opponent almost identical to her!
“Megan 2.0” is written and directed by Gerard Johnstone, based on a story by Johnstone and Akela Cooper. This sequel to “Megan” (2022) follows the story of Megan being rebuilt to combat a humanoid military robot that utilizes Megan’s technology and is attempting an AI takeover. The film stars Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ivanna Sakhno, and Jemaine Clement. Amie Donald physically portrays Megan, while Jenna Davis provides the character’s voice. Jason Blum and James Wan return as producers under their respective companies, Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster.
For those familiar with “Megan,” opinions about AI (Artificial Intelligence) may vary, falling into either positive or negative categories. However, the reality is that AI is advancing rapidly, more so than many realize. From robotics to medicine and from daily life to military applications, AI is making significant strides. This context sets the stage for the worthy sequel, “Megan 2.0.” Are the real-world concerns regarding AI legitimate? Influential figures like Elon Musk and Geoffrey Hinton, known as the Godfather of AI, caution us: “These things could get more intelligent than us and could decide to take over, and we need to worry now about how we prevent that from happening.” Musk has also remarked, “But then there’s also this thousand-foot wall of water, which is a tsunami of AI. And how much does cleaning the beach really matter if you’ve got a thousand-foot tsunami about to hit?”
Contemplating these issues contributes to the entertainment value of “Megan 2.0.” The film combines comedic moments with serious reflections on AI, showcasing that the concept of an android or a computer operating system going haywire is not as far-fetched or unbelievable as it may seem. In many ways, “Megan 2.0” emphasizes this point even more effectively than its predecessor, as the military’s use of AI threatens not just a family but an entire city—and potentially, the world.

As for the movie itself, James Wan delivers another exceptional performance as a director, crafting an action-packed thriller from start to finish. The film introduces new, thought-provoking, and entertaining elements, including a military android that borrows concepts from Megan but possesses more violent and destructive tendencies. Consequently, this android’s ability to think independently surpasses the control of its creators.
In the process, we encounter a mystery that I easily unraveled, along with action-packed sequences that entertain the audience. The Android AMELIA (Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android) is a beautiful yet malevolent creation, determined to take over the world. Originally designed for military use, she seeks to gain political and economic power. The FBI suspects that Megan’s original creator may possess insight or knowledge regarding AMELIA’s plans and might even be involved. This is the reason for the need to protect and fight against AMELIA. All the original characters return, albeit reluctantly, to assist in this battle because AMELIA has decided to eliminate everyone connected to the creation of Megan, putting them all in danger.
In life, we often make decisions and engage in activities without fully considering the consequences of our actions. These choices could affect our personal habits, impacting ourselves or others detrimentally, or they could involve procrastination that influences our future. Many believe they can defer actions today because there’s always tomorrow. However, as I’ve grown older and experienced life, I’ve come to realize a profound truth: none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Life can change unexpectedly—our health can fail, accidents happen, and the unpredictable nature of existence can strike when we least expect it. Open a newspaper, and you won’t need to look at the obituaries to find stories of tragic, unexpected deaths. The characters in this movie reflect this reality; they anticipate a long life but are suddenly thrust into situations that force them to make critical decisions that alter their desires and outlooks. Will they adapt? Life often demands change, even when we resist it.

We also see how parental decisions profoundly impact a child’s life, particularly the struggles faced by a working single parent. Is work prioritized over the child’s needs? Is the child left to navigate life alone, forced to grow up quickly using whatever tools they have to make their own decisions?
While “Megan” is extremely entertaining (I’ll see it again), it tackles these themes amidst its beautifully choreographed fight scenes and intense sequences. The film presents these concepts in a contemporary manner that should spark discussions among viewers. At the same time, we must recognize the potential dangers and benefits of AI and establish appropriate controls to ensure its safe use. In conversations with someone after the movie, we pondered whether we’ve already crossed a line, letting the cat out of the bag and now unable to regain control. Recall that quote from Elon Musk about a tsunami—there are many warnings regarding the dire consequences we might face in the future. The pressing questions become: What can we do to prevent Megan from becoming a reality? And beyond that, are we prepared for what the future holds and for eternity?
On a scale of 1 to 10, I personally liked “Megan 2.0” better than the original “Megan,” which I thought was terrific. Therefore, while just short of a perfect 10, I believe it deserves a rating of 9.5.

As I discussed with another moviegoer after the film, we must consider whether we have already crossed a line by unleashing AI without adequate oversight. We should reflect on Elon Musk’s warning about the potential consequences of technology. The pressing question becomes: what can we do before a scenario like “Megan” becomes a reality? And beyond that, are we prepared for the future and the eternal?
On a scale of 1 to 10, I personally liked “Megan 2.0” better than the original “Megan,” which I still thought was terrific. Therefore, I believe it deserves a rating of 9.5.
