“TOGETHER” is a 2025 supernatural horror film written and directed by Michael Shanks in his directorial debut. The film stars real-life married actors Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple who move to the countryside, where they encounter a mysterious force that horrifically alters their bodies. Released and distributed by NEON Films, known for their work with Nicolas Cage among others, this disturbing and at times difficult-to-watch film is precisely what many horror fans have been waiting for.
Franco plays Trim, a struggling musician who once experienced a measure of success, while Brie plays his long-time girlfriend and partner, Millie, who has taken a job as a schoolteacher in their new home. While hiking in the woods near their house, they fall into a hole that leads to an underground cave, setting off a chain of events that will change their lives forever. Fellow teacher Jamie, played by Damon Herriman, is a bit eccentric but is there to welcome them to the community and answer any questions they may have.
The acting in this psychological and physical horror film is commendable across the board. The sets, location, editing, and direction are all quite good, although the story can be deeply disturbing and challenging to watch at times. The real-life relationship between Franco and Brie lends credibility to their characters, as they play off each other effectively.
Throughout the movie, we witness the inner conflict people often face when making decisions, a relatable experience for many of us. Questions arise, such as: Should I have done this or that? What if I had chosen differently? How will this decision impact on us? Who can I trust? How committed do I/we really want to be as a couple? Do we truly love each other enough to make difficult decisions together? At times, we see the positive outcomes, while at others, we experience the difficulties and horrors that arise from those choices.
Without revealing too much of the plot, which has a mysterious element, the film portrays good and evil influences surrounding us. It is our responsibility to consider the choices we face carefully.
I found this movie successful in terms of horror, but I also found it challenging to watch; I had to maintain focus, or I risked becoming lost in the story. The theater was nearly packed for the matinee, and I was surprised that most attendees seemed to enjoy the film.
While I don’t consider it a great film, for fans of this genre, it will likely stick with you for some time. Personally, I’m not entirely fond of the supernatural elements seen in films like this. However, I would rate it somewhat better than I expected, giving it a score of 6.5 out of 10.
